WWE Extreme Rules 2020 Predictions
The long-awaited Horror Show at Extreme Rules has a unique card with stipulations that are usually not seen in the squared circle. Braun Strowma faces his demons in Bray Wyatt as they battle in a Swamp Match. Rey Mysterio takes an eye for an eye to a literal standpoint as he will face Seth Rollins with the victor gouging their opponent's eye out. The New Day takes on Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura in a Tables Match for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships.
The action doesn't stop there as Bayley will defend her Smackdown Women’s Championship against Nikki Cross. Also, Asuka will defend her Raw Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks. Apollo Crews will try and redeem the name of the United States Championship as he takes on MVP, the holder of the new United States Championship belt. Although the stipulation has been kept secret, Dolph Ziggler will face Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship with the stipulation to be named by the challenger.
Here are my predictions.
The New Day (c) vs. Cesaro & Shinsuke Nakamura - SmackDown Tag Team Championships
This feud has been built up originally having Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura beat The New Day clean. The push has been strong for the two singles competitors as they both are looking to regain some recognition on the roster. This both plays off on-screen, possibly backstage, and WWE Universe ideals. After using tables to settle the score after multiple matches throughout this build. Their feud comes to a head at Extreme Rules in a Tables Match.
The New Day should be on top of this one. It is a safe choice in unsure times. Cesaro and Nakamura deserve the belts on them, but no fans outside fans in attendance sure make me think that anything drastic would be in the back of WWE’s mind outside of a big-four pay-per-view. The stipulations in the upcoming matches sure sound rustic but this all might fog placed over us to get to Summerslam.
Either way, if Cesaro and Nakamura do come out on top this sure would be a crowd-pleaser. If the New Day win, this is par for the course and we’ll see what unfolds down the line given they have dominated the Smackdown tag team division. Maybe Lucha House Party next?
Asuka (c) vs. Sasha Banks - Raw Women's Championship
After Sasha Banks started to get jealous of Bayley’s Smackdown Women's Title run, she has decided to take the matter into her own hands by challenging Asuka for the Raw Women’s Championship. The contract signing saw them go to blows as Banks is ready to take over the whole company. Tag team matches involving Asuka and Banks in multiple facets have seen the two face off many times in the build for Sunday. This came to a head as Banks got a chance on the go-home episode of Smackdown to battle Asuka in another tag-team match-up.
Although this decision is a tough one, I have to go with Asuka winning here with Bayley shenanigans being in play. I know I’ve said this multiple times but we need to remember that they are supposed to break up at some point and the tension should still be there. Would it be cool to see Bayley and Banks both hold all the gold? Sure. At the same time, continuing to build this already great Women’s division is halted when all the belts are in one spot.
Asuka should win this one either clean or with Bayley’s inopportune involvement. Sasha Banks should be gearing up for a split between her and her best-friend Bayley, fans or not.
Apollo Crews (c) vs. MVP - United States Championship
After defeating Andrade to be the United States Champion, Apollo Crews has been paired to work with MVP and Bobby Lashley. Instead of the obvious choice of having Lashley compete for the US title, MVP has taken over the spotlight and has inserted himself into the title picture after beating Apollo Crews on an episode of Raw.
With a match set for Extreme Rules, Crews is looking to overcome MVP who currently displays himself with the new US Championship around his waist. Crews have not appeared on television for a few weeks as Ricochet and Cedric Alexander build this feud for him.
This match can go in two ways. Either Apollo Crews retains the belt and face Bobby Lashley at Summerslam or MVP wins the United States Championship and faces Bobby Lashley at Summerslam. Either way, Bobby Lashley should get this belt around his waist and the fact that MVP is in this role now hurts me. If I had to choose, MVP sounds more fun but the push for Apollo Crews has been strong. Crews being off TV scares me a bit.
This can go either way but I think Apollo Crews retains the US Title.
Bayley (c) vs. Nikki Cross - SmackDown Women's Championship
With Bayley sitting at the top of the Women’s Division it has been difficult to pair her with anyone that she already hasn’t beaten. Nikki Cross has inserted herself into the Smackdown Women’s Title picture by continuously costing Bayley matches and catching her off guard backstage. The coming-out party for Nikki Cross will be in full effect at Extreme Rules as Bayley will have to defend her title against the scrappy underdog.
Probably the second easiest prediction of the night, Bayley wins. Nikki Cross is great and I've mentioned that if there was a mid-card women’s belt that she would own it. Sadly this isn’t the case and she will fail unceremoniously to Bayley. Bayley is at the top of the mountain when it comes to Women’s wrestling and doubts she is pushed off by Nikki Cross.
Also, I’m a big fan of Cross’s new ring gear.
Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler - WWE Championship
The trade that sent AJ Styles to Smackdown brought Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode to Raw. On his first day back on the red brand, Ziggler got into with WWE Champion Drew McIntyre. The two during the contract signing agreed that Ziggler can pick the stipulation with McIntyre confident to be the victor. Ziggler has kept the stipulation secret and has not been revealed.
McIntyre had his heartstrings pulled as former friend Heath Slater returned to Raw to confront McIntyre for his actions while Slater was left on the unemployment list. This turned this feud more than just another for McIntyre as things got personal. McIntyre has vowed to torture Ziggler in their match at Extreme Rules.
Probably the easiest prediction of the night, McIntyre wins. We don’t know the stipulation and we don’t know what comes next for McIntyre at Summerslam given the rumors that are floating around. What we do know is that McIntyre is the best champion currently in the WWE and should defeat Ziggler here.
Although I may be way off. I’m going to predict that this match will be a submission match. The match at Extreme Rules should build up McIntyre for the future. So let's have Ziggler play on his strengths and pick a stipulation that McIntyre can’t currently win. When McIntyre does, he will now look stronger than ever with a new submission to boot.
Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt - Swamp Fight
After Braun Strowman defeated Bray Wyatt at Money in the Bank, Wyatt was off TV to both let the feud cool down and have a child. Wyatt is now back and has said to move forward needs to go back. Go back he has as Wyatt now portrays himself in his originally cult leader Bray Wyatt gimmick.
Strowman has taken well to this as he fears that losing fear will bring back the fiend, something he can’t beat. Strowman’s great work with promos has helped him grow not only himself and the feud as they battle in a Swamp Match at Extreme Rules.
Although it is tempting to pick Strowman, this is a non-title match for a reason making me believe Wyatt will come out on top. I’ve talked about in length that Wyatt doesn’t need a need the belt, but he does need to be booked strong. A win here keeps that as he lost his last match to Strowman.
This match is probably the one I am most excited for. I can’t wait to see what WWE does when it comes to cinematics.
Rey Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins - Eye for an Eye Match
After Seth Rollins lost to Drew McIntyre at Money in the Bank, Rollins turned into an animal by gouging the eye of Rey Mysterio into the steel step. This has brought the involvement of Rey’s son Dominic into the picture as both Mysertios are ready to fight for their family name. After beating Seth Rollins to pick the stipulation, Mysterio took the term Eye for an Eye to a literal sense by picking a unique stipulation. The winner will have to gouge the other person's eye out.
This is a tough choice but I think Rey Mysterio wins this match here. You might think I’m crazy but Seth Rollins is having a child in the upcoming months and might want to be by the side of Becky Lynch when it happens. This will give a reason to be off TV and return when necessary.
Rollins is no stranger to wearing contacts either so an eye color change could be in effect when he returns. Mysterio working while not under contract could make you think otherwise about this matchup but Mysterio’s future lies in his son going forward.
